The Next Steps ....

Becoming a member at College Hills Church of Christ

At College Hills we believe growth in Christ occurs in community.  Being part of a local church is the ideal context for this to occur.  As the old saying goes, “there are no only children in God’s family.”  When someone confesses their faith in Christ and is then baptized, he or she is added by the Lord to the church universal (Acts 2:47).    Placing membership or as we often say, “joining our journey,” is a way to openly identify with our congregation.

Often when we hear the word “member” we think of paying dues, having ones name on a roll, and being part of an organization or institution.  When we speak of church membership we imagine something else.  Two biblical images are important here.  First, we are connected to one another by God’s Spirit becoming part of the living body of Christ.  In what might be the church’s highest compliment the Apostle Paul calls the church Christ’s body, “…the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” (Ephesians 1:23)  Second, when we become part of the church we are joining a family.  The Apostle Paul in his letter to Timothy calls the church “God’s household.”  (I Timothy 3:15)  We are a family of believers who share life’s burdens and blessings.  Inherent in both images is a sense of connection and accountability.
